The Two Types Of Leaders

The Two Types of Leaders: A Founder’s Journey from Command-and-Control to Trust-and-Inspire

Leaving corporate America to start my own business was not a decision I made lightly. For years, I had climbed the ranks, working in environments that sometimes were the polar opposite of each other.  Unfortunately some thrived on leadership that could be defined as a command-and-control leadership. The systems were efficient, but something was always missing. I saw employees who were physically present but emotionally checked out, going through the motions until the clock struck five. It was a culture of compliance, not commitment—and it wasn’t sustainable.

When I took the leap to become an entrepreneur, I vowed to create something different. My mission became clear: to help individuals and organizations engage employees in a way that inspires belief in their company’s mission and the trust that leadership believe in their ability as individual contributors to deliver on that mission. I’ve learned that the key to this transformation lies in understanding two distinct leadership paradigms: Command-and-Control and Trust-and-Inspire.

Command-and-Control:

In the corporate world and any organization for that matter,  many times command-and-control leadership was the default. It’s an approach built on authority, rules, and structure. Leaders at the top made decisions, and everyone else followed orders. It was efficient, yes, but at what cost?

My Experience with Command-and-Control
  1. Authority-Driven Decision Making: Leaders who believed their title alone justified their decisions. There is little room for collaboration, and innovation often feels stifled.

  2. Focus on Compliance Over Engagement: The emphasis is always on meeting deadlines and hitting numbers. People are reduced to their output, and their unique talents and aspirations often go unnoticed.

  3. Motivation Through Fear and Incentives: Performance reviews and bonus structures are used as carrots and sticks. While they drive short-term results, they fail to inspire long-term loyalty or passion.

  4. Micromanagement: In this system, trust is scarce. Leaders feel the need to oversee every detail, leaving employees feeling undervalued and disempowered.

Trust-and-Inspire: The Leadership I Embrace

When I started my business, I knew I wanted to build a culture centered on trust and potential. The trust-and-inspire model resonated deeply with me because it prioritizes people over processes and potential over position. It’s a leadership style that asks, "What can we achieve together?" rather than, "What can you do for me?"

How I Lead with Trust and Inspire
  1. Cultivating Trust in Relationships: Trust is the bedrock of any meaningful working relationship. I start with the belief that people are inherently capable and want to contribute. Building trust means creating an environment where my team feels safe to share ideas and take risks without fear of judgment. This trust is nurtured by consistent actions—showing up, following through, and being transparent, even when the conversations are tough.

  2. Practicing Empathy: Empathy is about understanding, not necessarily agreeing. I’ve learned to listen with the intent to understand where someone is coming from, especially during disagreements. By acknowledging their perspective, we’re able to reach resolutions together that respect both sides. This practice fosters respect and reinforces the idea that everyone’s voice matters.

  3. Motivation Through Purpose: Instead of focusing solely on performance goals, I’ve worked to connect daily tasks to our larger mission. When people see how their work contributes to a greater purpose, they don’t just work harder—they work with heart.

  4. Encouraging Innovation and Autonomy: Mistakes aren’t punished in my organization—they’re seen as opportunities to learn. This mindset has unlocked creativity and innovation that wouldn’t have been possible in a command-and-control environment..

Balancing the Two Styles

That’s not to say command-and-control doesn’t have its place. There are moments in any business—a tight deadline, a critical decision—when clear direction and structure are necessary. The difference is that these moments are exceptions, not the rule. Trust-and-inspire is the foundation of how I lead, and command-and-control is a tool I use sparingly and intentionally.

Here’s how I’ve learned to balance the two:

  1. Adapt to the Situation:

    • High-stakes moments call for decisive action. In these instances, I lean into clear, directive leadership while still respecting my team’s input.

    • For long-term growth, I focus on empowering my team to take the lead.

  2. Foster a Culture of Feedback:

    • Create an open-door policy where teammates feel comfortable sharing their thoughts. This feedback helps ensure we’re all aligned.

  3. Model the Behavior I Expect:

    • As a leader, I strive to embody the values of trust, authenticity, empathy and inspiration. When my team sees me lead by example, it reinforces the culture we’ve built together.

Why This Matters for Your Organization

If you’re reading this as a leader or aspiring leader, I want you to know that trust-and-inspire isn’t just a feel-good idea—it’s a game-changer. Employees who believe in their company’s mission don’t just clock in and out; they show up with passion, creativity, and commitment. They become ambassadors for your brand, contributing not just to your bottom line but to your legacy.

In today’s world, where talent retention and engagement are more critical than ever, shifting from command-and-control to trust-and-inspire isn’t just a choice—it’s a necessity. The future belongs to organizations that prioritize people and potential over power and position.
